Menopause Q & A
What is menopause?
Menopause marks the end of your reproductive years. You are considered to have reached menopause once you have gone 12 consecutive months without a menstrual period. This change occurs when your ovaries stop releasing eggs and produce lower levels of estrogen and progesterone.
There is also a transitional period known as perimenopause, which can begin several years before your final period. During this time, hormone levels fluctuate, and a range of symptoms may develop. The average age for menopause is around 52, but anywhere between 45 and 58 is considered normal. Some women experience earlier menopause due to medical treatments such as chemotherapy, or immediately if they undergo a hysterectomy that includes removal of the ovaries.
What are the signs of menopause?
Symptoms vary widely from woman to woman. You may experience several, a few, or none at all. The severity and duration of symptoms also differ, making each woman’s experience unique.
Common symptoms include:
- Hot flashes and night sweats
- Insomnia or disrupted sleep
- Mood swings, irritability, or anxiety
- Fatigue or decreased energy
- Vaginal dryness and discomfort during intercourse
- Decreased libido
- Weight gain
- Urinary leakage or urgency
A key concern for many women is vaginal atrophy, which occurs when declining estrogen levels cause the vaginal tissues to become thinner, drier, and less elastic. This can lead to discomfort, recurrent urinary tract infections, and painful intimacy. These symptoms are common and treatable.

How can menopause symptoms be managed?
At Maria Regina OB/GYN, we take a customized approach to menopause care. Treatment is based on your symptoms, medical history, lifestyle, and personal preferences.
Effective options may include:
- Lifestyle modifications: Adjustments in diet, exercise, sleep habits, and stress management can significantly improve overall well-being and help manage weight, mood, and energy levels.
- Hormone therapy: For women who qualify, hormone replacement therapy (HRT) can restore declining hormone levels and reduce many troubling symptoms, including hot flashes, vaginal dryness, and sleep disturbances. Treatment is tailored to your specific needs and monitored closely with regular follow-ups.
- Non-hormonal therapies: For women who cannot or prefer not to use hormones, alternative medications, vaginal moisturizers, pelvic floor therapy, and other supportive treatments are available.
Your provider will work with you to find the safest and most effective plan for your situation.
