Colposcopy

Colposcopy at Maria Regina OB/GYN

A colposcopy is an important diagnostic procedure that allows your provider to examine the cervix, vagina, and vulva with greater clarity than a standard pelvic exam. At Maria Regina OB/GYN, we use this advanced evaluation tool to identify abnormal tissue changes early and guide appropriate treatment when needed. If you’ve recently had an abnormal Pap smear or a positive HPV test, a colposcopy can provide essential answers about your cervical health.

Colposcopy Q & A

What is a colposcopy?

A colposcopy is a minimally invasive procedure that uses a specialized instrument called a colposcope to magnify and illuminate the tissues of the cervix, vagina, and vulva. This close inspection helps your provider identify abnormal cells that may not be visible during a routine pelvic exam. It is commonly performed when screening tests—such as a Pap smear—indicate possible abnormalities.

Why would I need a colposcopy?

Your provider may recommend a colposcopy for several reasons, including:

  • Abnormal Pap smear results
  • Positive HPV test, particularly for high-risk strains associated with cervical cancer
  • Suspicion of abnormal tissue growth or precancerous changes
  • Evaluation of genital warts or persistent symptoms such as unexplained bleeding

A colposcopy helps determine whether further evaluation or treatment is needed and ensures that any concerning changes are addressed promptly.

What happens during a colposcopy?

A colposcopy is performed in-office and typically takes only a few minutes.

Here’s what you can expect:

  1. You will recline comfortably on the exam table, similar to a routine pelvic exam.
  2. A speculum is gently inserted to open the vaginal walls and provide clear access to the cervix.
  3. Your provider applies a mild solution—often vinegar-based—to highlight abnormal areas. This may cause slight tingling but is not painful.
  4. The colposcope remains outside your body and provides a magnified, well-lit view of your cervical tissues.

Most patients remain relaxed and comfortable throughout the procedure.

What if the doctor sees something abnormal?

If your provider identifies an area of concern, a small biopsy of tissue may be collected for further testing. The biopsy process is quick and may feel like a brief pinch or cramp. Some biopsies require a local anesthetic depending on the location, but many do not.

After the procedure:

  • Light spotting or mild discharge is common
  • You may experience slight cramping
  • Over-the-counter pain relievers are usually sufficient

You will receive clear instructions on what to expect and when results will be available.

Why is timely evaluation important?

Early detection is key to maintaining your reproductive health. Conditions such as cervical dysplasia and early-stage cervical cancer are highly treatable when identified early. A colposcopy provides valuable information that helps your provider determine the safest and most effective next steps.
