Yeast Infection Q & A
What is a yeast infection?
A yeast infection occurs when there is an overgrowth of Candida, a type of fungus that naturally lives in the body. While Candida is normally present in small amounts, certain conditions can cause it to multiply rapidly, leading to inflammation and irritation in the vaginal area.
Common symptoms include:
- Burning or itching in the vagina and vulva
- Pain or discomfort
- Painful urination
- Pain or discomfort during intercourse
- Thick, white discharge (often described as “cottage cheese-like”)
- Redness, swelling, or soreness
- Mild to moderate odor
Symptoms can vary in severity, and not all women experience every symptom.
Because symptoms can overlap with other infections—such as bacterial vaginosis (BV) or sexually transmitted infections—it’s important to seek medical evaluation rather than self-diagnosing.
What causes a yeast infection?
Several factors can disrupt the natural balance of bacteria and yeast in the vagina, allowing Candida to grow excessively. Common triggers include:
- Hormonal fluctuations (premenstrual changes, pregnancy, menopause)
- Birth control pills
- Diabetes (especially when blood sugar is not well-controlled)
- Recent antibiotic use
- Weakened immune system
- Sexual activity
Yeast infections are not considered sexually transmitted infections, but they can be transferred between partners through intimate contact.
How is a yeast infection diagnosed?
Diagnosis begins with a pelvic exam. Your provider will:
- Examine the vaginal tissues for signs of redness, swelling, and irritation
- Collect a small sample of vaginal discharge using a swab
- Send the sample to a laboratory to determine whether Candida or other organisms are present
This step is essential to ensure that the correct underlying cause is treated.
How is a yeast infection treated?
Treatment typically involves antifungal medications, which may be prescribed as:
- Oral tablets
- Vaginal suppositories
- Antifungal creams
Your provider may also recommend soothing topical treatments to relieve itching or burning while the antifungal medication takes effect. If testing reveals that your symptoms are caused by a different infection, you will receive the appropriate treatment.
Chronic or recurrent yeast infections may require a more extended treatment plan.
