IUD Q & A
What is an IUD?
There are two main types of IUDs, each working in a slightly different way.
Hormonal IUDs
Brands such as Mirena®, Kyleena®, and Skyla® release a small, steady amount of progestin into the uterus. These hormones work by:
- Thickening cervical mucus to block sperm
- Sometimes preventing ovulation
- Thinning the uterine lining
Depending on the brand, hormonal IUDs are effective for 3 to 7 years and may reduce menstrual bleeding and cramping.
Non-Hormonal IUD
Paragard® is the only copper (non-hormonal) IUD available. Copper is naturally toxic to sperm, preventing them from fertilizing an egg. Paragard is effective for up to 10 years and contains no hormones—an advantage for women who prefer a hormone-free option.
What are the benefits of an IUD?
IUDs offer several advantages:
- Extremely effective—more than 99%
- Low maintenance—no daily pills or frequent reminders
- Reversible—fertility returns quickly after removal
- Long-lasting—3 to 10 years depending on the type
- Reduced menstrual symptoms with hormonal IUDs
- Hormone-free choice available with Paragard
Paragard can also be used as emergency contraception when inserted within 5 days of unprotected intercourse.
While IUDs are safe for most women, potential risks include:
- Slightly increased risk of infection shortly after insertion
- Rare risk of device displacement
- No protection against STDs
For sexually transmitted infection protection, condoms should still be used with new or multiple partners.
How do I know if an IUD is right for me?
The decision depends on your health history, personal preferences, and family-planning goals. During your visit, your provider will:
- Review your medical and sexual health history
- Discuss your menstrual cycle
- Talk through your contraceptive options
- Address any concerns about comfort, hormones, or side effects
- Recommend the type of IUD that best matches your needs
Your provider will explain the insertion process, expected side effects, and follow-up care so you can make a confident, informed choice.
