Hysteroscopy

Hysteroscopy at Maria Regina OB/GYN

When your provider needs a closer look at the uterus to understand symptoms or confirm a diagnosis, a hysteroscopy is one of the most valuable tools available. At Maria Regina OB/GYN, we use hysteroscopy techniques to examine the uterine cavity with precision and clarity. This minimally invasive procedure could help us identify the causes of abnormal bleeding, structural abnormalities, and other gynecologic concerns—allowing us to develop effective, personalized treatment plans.

Hysteroscopy Q & A

Why would I need a hysteroscopy?

A hysteroscopy allows your provider to view the inside of your uterus and identify abnormalities that may not be visible through standard imaging or pelvic exams. It is commonly recommended when evaluating:

  • Abnormal or heavy menstrual bleeding
  • Irregular bleeding patterns
  • Postmenopausal bleeding
  • Recurring miscarriages
  • Possible uterine polyps, fibroids, or scarring
  • Displaced or missing IUD
  • Suspicion of structural issues affecting fertility

Your provider will review your symptoms, medical history, and test results to determine whether hysteroscopy is the right diagnostic approach for you.

What happens during a hysteroscopy?

A hysteroscopy can be performed in-office or in a surgical setting, depending on the reason for the exam and whether treatment will be performed at the same time. You may receive local anesthesia, sedation, or general anesthesia.

During the procedure:

  1. You recline comfortably on the exam table.
  2. The cervix is gently opened using dilators or medication.
  3. A thin, lighted instrument called a hysteroscope is inserted through the vagina and cervix into the uterus.
  4. A sterile gas or saline solution may be used to gently expand the uterus for better visibility.
  5. The integrated camera sends real-time images to a screen, allowing your provider to closely examine the uterine lining and the openings of the Fallopian tubes.

Most patients experience mild cramping or discomfort similar to menstrual cramps. After the procedure, you may notice light spotting and should avoid sexual intercourse for about a week to reduce infection risk.

Maria Regina OB/GYN uses modern hysteroscopy systems designed for comfort and accuracy, including portable technology that provides clear, detailed imaging.

What if a problem is detected?

One benefit of hysteroscopy is that diagnosis and treatment can often be performed in the same session. If your provider discovers an issue, they may:

  • Remove polyps or small fibroids
  • Release uterine adhesions (scar tissue)
  • Collect a biopsy for further evaluation
  • Assist with IUD management
  • Perform procedures related to sterilization

This targeted approach reduces the need for additional surgeries and allows many women to receive treatment and answers in a single visit.
