Pregnancy Q & A
What is prenatal care?
Prenatal care is the ongoing medical evaluation and guidance you receive during pregnancy. Its purpose is to protect your health, monitor your baby’s growth, and identify any potential complications early. Early prenatal care—starting as soon as you confirm your pregnancy—is one of the most important steps you can take for a healthy outcome. Many women also schedule preconception visits to discuss fertility, existing health conditions, medications, and lifestyle factors before trying to conceive.
During your prenatal appointments, our team will:
- Check your vital signs, blood pressure, weight, and overall health
- Perform routine laboratory tests to assess blood type, blood count, infections, and other important markers
- Monitor your baby’s growth and heart rate
- Use ultrasound imaging to estimate your due date, evaluate fetal development, and screen for certain conditions
- Offer genetic screening options when appropriate
- Discuss your medical history, family history, and any risk factors
- Review nutrition, prenatal vitamins, and safe exercise plans
- Provide guidance on managing common pregnancy symptoms such as nausea, fatigue, or back pain
- Educate you on what to expect during each trimester
Your visits are also an opportunity for open communication. We encourage you to ask questions, express concerns, and talk about physical or emotional changes. Every pregnancy is unique, and personalized guidance ensures that you receive care tailored to your needs.
What if I have a high-risk pregnancy?
A pregnancy is considered high-risk if certain medical conditions or factors increase the likelihood of complications for you or your baby. These may include high blood pressure, diabetes, thyroid disorders, multiple gestation (twins or more), advanced maternal age, previous pregnancy complications, or other medical issues.
If your pregnancy is categorized as high-risk, our team will:
- Schedule more frequent prenatal visits
- Closely monitor both your health and your baby’s development
- Coordinate care with maternal-fetal medicine specialists if needed
- Adjust medications safely
- Provide guidance on nutrition, activity, and symptom management
- Use advanced imaging and diagnostic tools to track progress
High-risk does not necessarily mean unsafe—it simply means closer evaluation and planning are needed. With expert care and proactive management, many high-risk pregnancies progress safely to a healthy delivery.
What happens if I experience a miscarriage?
Miscarriage, often occurring in the first trimester, is unfortunately more common than many people realize. It can be emotionally devastating, and having compassionate medical guidance is essential during this time. At Maria Regina OB/GYN, we approach miscarriage care with sensitivity, clarity, and support.
We will:
- Evaluate your symptoms and confirm the diagnosis
- Explain possible causes and discuss factors that may have contributed
- Provide options for follow-up care, which may include observation, medication, or a minor procedure, depending on your situation
- Support your emotional and physical recovery
- Discuss future pregnancy planning if and when you feel ready
You will never face this experience alone. Our team will help you understand your body’s healing process and guide you toward the next steps with empathy and respect.
